Dr. Santiago Wood, Ed.D, is the Executive Director of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) in the greater metropolitan area of Washington, DC. Since 1972 NABE is the exclusive national professional organization devoted to representing Bilingual and Dual Language Learners and Bilingual Education professionals. NABE has affiliates in more than 20 states, China, Spain and Mexico that collectively work with many education leaders and policymakers to represent the more than 4.6 million Bilingual/Dual Language English Learners, teachers, parents, paraprofessionals, administrators, professors, advocates, researchers, board members, corporate partners and 18 special interest Groups (SIG’s); focusing on effective research and practice related to bilingual education.
Dr. Santiago Wood is a 30-year veteran educational leader and a former US Department of Education Title VII and American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow. He earned his doctorate degree, with distinction, from the University of San Francisco in Multicultural, International and Second Language Acquisition under the guidance of Dr. Alma Flor Ada and Paolo Freire. Dr. Wood also holds earned degrees in Business Administration, Finance and International Trade at the Bachelors and Masters levels and an Honorary JD from Armstrong University in Berkeley. He also earned post-graduate Certification in Urban Superintendent Leadership and Administration from the Superintendents Academy at Harvard University Kennedy School of Business.
Dr. Santiago Wood has served successfully in various capacities in the Pre-K-20 environment as a bilingual teacher-aide, bilingual teacher, central office administrator, assistant professor, university trustee and superintendent of schools in several urban school districts in California and abroad. He has written, published and presented on many international trade, bilingual and dual language topics. He also served on the US Presidential Delegation that signed over the Panama Canal back to the Panamanian Government. For the past five years he has been directing and participating in Dual Language Institutes in Puerto Rico, Spain and China. Dr. Santiago Wood is a Second-generation immigrant and native of Panama, with roots in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, Brazil and the US. He has lived, taught and traveled abroad extensively. He is fluently bilingual in Spanish, Portuguese, French and English.
Included among his many distinctions are the coveted Mexican Government Distinguished “Ohtli” Diplomatic Award, the Order of “Santa Maria La Antigua” Award from the King of Spain, Amigos de la Prensa Latina Award, League of United Latin American Citizens Hispanic Educator of the Year Award, National Urban League “Ron Brown” Presidential Impact Award and the NAACP Educator and Community Impact Leader Award. Dr. Santiago Wood was appointed to the Presidential National Education Advisory Commission on Schools of Choice. He is also the recipient of several Congressional and Legislative citations for Educational Excellence and Community Development. He has served as the chair on a number of city and civic commissions (Economic Development, Planning and Development, Mental Health, School Bond & Accountability Citizens Councils).
Dr. Santiago Wood proudly serves as a Youth Mentor and motivator to several education and religious foundations both domestically and abroad. He is a dedicated father and husband with strong faith and belief in the resiliency and unlimited potential of All Children. He also believes that the attitudes, beliefs and expectations of parents and teachers in children will have a lifelong impact on their success that will enable them to become positive world “changers.” Dr. Wood is a strong supporter and proponent of Jose Marti philosophy, “Los Ninos son la Esperanza del Mundo con los Padres y Maetros que son el Puente que los enlacen hacia el Futuro.” And like Confucius, he deeply believes that “If you want to plan for life, you must educate the Children.” Dr. Santiago Wood is guided by his strong spiritual faith and belief that ALL things are possible with God.
